Mary Kay Responds to National Increase in Domestic Violence With Campaign to Give Hope, Give Joy and Give Dreams

Alarming Statistics: Shelters report that abuse is more violent due to the economy. On average, three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day.

No shade of lipstick can cover up the horrific damage of domestic abuse, which is on the rise in the United States. But cosmetics giant Mary Kay Inc. will call on the power of lipstick to help end domestic violence through its Beauty that Counts® program. Consumers can join Mary Kay in its effort to change the lives of women and children around the world through the purchase of a limited-edition* Beauty that Counts® Mary Kay® Creme Lipstick. In the U.S., from Sept. 15 through Dec. 15, 2011, one dollar will be donated from each purchase of “Give Hope,” “Give Joy” and “Give Dreams” lipstick shades.

As part of the Beauty that Counts® program, in the U.S., Mary Kay Inc. is proud to support The Mary Kay Foundation in its efforts to end domestic violence. Domestic violence shelters throughout the United States report the economy continues to significantly affect women – with domestic violence increasing for the third straight year and government cutbacks decreasing shelters’ ability to help survivors, according to the third "Mary Kay Truth About Abuse” national survey conducted in 2011. In addition to domestic violence incidents growing and funding sources diminishing, the survey also found the abuse is more severe.

This is the fourth year for the Beauty that Counts® campaign. Mary Kay has donated just under $4 million (USD) since 2008 from the worldwide sales of Beauty that Counts® Mary Kay® Creme Lipsticks to causes that change the lives of women and children worldwide.

“Mary Kay is proud to have given just under $4 million (USD) since 2008 to non-profit organizations around the world that assist women and children,” said Franco. “With the current state of the global economy, we know the needs continue to grow and funds have decreased for local non-profits. Based on the enthusiasm and momentum from Beauty that Counts’® success during the last three years, we’re convinced we will raise more funds to help even more women and children.”

The Mary Kay Foundation has awarded $25 million to shelters and programs addressing domestic violence prevention over the last ten years as part of its efforts to help prevent domestic violence. The Mary Kay Foundation donates a total of $3 million among 150 domestic violence shelters in all 50 states every year to assist women and children survivors.
